I have the following code :

from Tkinter import *

def b1down(event):
    print 'hello'


root = Tk()
drawing_area = Canvas(root)
drawing_area.pack()
drawing_area.bind("<ButtonPress-1>", b1down)
root.mainloop()

I would like, that when I click somewhere, there is a new textbox that allows the user to enter some text like this (like in a Paint drawing software)

Do you have an idea of which kind of Python object to use ? (I don't think a tkinter Entry would be adapted here...)

A Entry widget is what you need (it can be adapted here).

Simply place a Entry widget on the position of mouse click:

def b1down(event):
    entry = Entry(root,bd=0,font=("Purisa",15)) #No Border and added font:)
    entry.place(x= event.x, y= event.y)
    entry.focus_force()

root = Tk()
root.columnconfigure(0, weight=1)
root.rowconfigure(0, weight=1)
drawing_area = Canvas(root)
drawing_area.grid(sticky=N+E+S+W)
drawing_area.bind("<ButtonPress-1>", b1down)
root.mainloop()

To get the the position of mouse click use the event.x and event.y methods.

If you want a real item on the canvas -- versus an embedded entry widget -- you can make the text items editable. It requires a little bit of work to set up the bindings, but its pretty straight-forward.

Here's an example:

Waw! Thanks so much, this code will surely be useful for my project! But, it seems that if we use this class, I would need to redefine everything : copy/paste, cut, etc. and lots of "usual" things that happen in a textbox. What do you think ? –  Basj Dec 13 '13 at 20:07

@Basj: yes, you have to implement cut, copy, paste, and a few other features. It's a little bit of work, but it's pretty simple. As you can see, implementing arrows, backspace, home and end were all just a couple lines of code each. It's a typical tradeoff where you have to decide which is more important: your time, or the end user experience. –  Bryan Oakley Dec 13 '13 at 21:08

Ok @BryanOakley do you think there is a ready-to-use tkinter Canvas editable textitems class somewhere (maybe lots of people have coded the same thing already ?) with copy/paste/cut, selection of text (ie text in "blue") etc. Such a class could probably be useful later. In order to code copy/paste, do I have to create a text buffer myself, etc. ? –  Basj Dec 19 '13 at 9:51
