Good morning i have some tables in JOIN each table with index i don't understand why we are losing the time on the Aggregate; the query is:

on the stats,flopstats,turnstats and riverstas tables we have about 700k records.

on the hands table about 120k records.

on the other tables some k records.

Things that stand out in your plan include:

  • a questionable type (double instead of int or bigint) for handsdata.pockertype
  • a missing index on heronames (networknumber, heroname)
  • a missing index on tournaments (tournamentcode, tournament_id) in the event you ever get multitudes of rows that actually have a non-null code

Following up on your edit: the Bitmap Index Scan on "stats index" part is fine fine. The real problem is the erroneous stats, which lead to a nested loop plan with ~120k rows instead of the expected 138. Run analyze on each of your tables to see if it makes a difference. On the stats tables with higher cardinality, run set statistics (see: alter table) to increase the sampling a bit before doing so.

Aside: You still have this very, very ugly problem:

Casting is reasonably fast… except when you have to do it 240k times.

You forgot to fix the type problem. And then alter your stats. I doubt there's much more you can do with this query. –  Denis Dec 17 '13 at 14:55
