I am currently studying logical level modeling using different CASE tools.

I created a temporal CUSTOMER object named as CUST_BASE which has following structure:

All current DBMS products do not enforce temporal primary key constraints in a sense that time period mismatches can happen even with this construction. My design only guarantees that in physical table which I forward engineer from this model will not have two rows with exactly same business startdate and transaction timestamp for each unique cust_id.

Now I know that customers might change their name and so I will generate a different object containing temporal first name attribute. Of course I could have put this and many others of customers attributes into one CUSTOMER object but because I want flexibility I want every attribute to be a different table at physical level.

How relation between this object and base object should be thought? I cannot have in FK all temporal attributes since during customers customership name and other attributes might have different ranges of validity.

Is this relation 1:1 in each time interval? Or is it 1:M so that customer might have different names during the whole duration of his/hers customership?

How about if I create a object containing all contracts which customer can have at one time interal? Only business requirement is that one contract can belong to just one customer.

Has my design some obvious flaws except of course it is somewhat complicated because it involves 4 temporal attributes?

Does it mix physical level design too tightly with the logical level design?

I am new to this formal data modeling and I am economist by training, having done work as a BI-consultant.
