I am trying to find the 6 corners of this RGB hexagon (https://www.dropbox.com/s/55equxbc0q9e284/IMG_1483.JPG) but I can't get the desired results. I'm using MATLAB. This is what I've tried so far after converting the image to grayscale:

  1. Use 'corner' function which uses Harris Edge detector method. But it's not working because image is too noisy.

  2. Finding the edges using 'sobel' and 'canny' edge detectors and then performing a hough transform to get the lines. Since the image was noisy, there were too many edges detected and thus, hough transform didn't work properly.

  3. I applied a median filter to remove the noise and removed most of the unwanted edges. But still, not getting a good hough transform.

  4. I've tried doing the above functions with a corresponding binary image also. Still, not the desired results.

Can anyone please suggest any other technique to find the corners of this image? Or suggest a modification to the existing algorithm which involves edge detection, hough transform, finding peaks using 'houghpeaks' and using 'houghlines'.

Since you don't care too much about pixel intensity inside the hexagon, you can just set them to a constant value:

Then you need to dilate the edges to make them connected:

I think you can use haris corner detection now. My matlab doesn't support corner.m function. But I test the image on this mathwork self-written file and it works.

The edges are lot better now but inbuilt corner function still isn't giving me the 6 points. Hough results are a lot better but still not getting the corners out of them. Can you tell me if you got the correct corners using that? And can you please explain I2=double(I1).*bw; I3=mean(I2(:))*ones(size(I2)).*bw; . Thanks. –  alasin Dec 29 '13 at 17:06
    
you can imshow(I2), and imshow(I3) to observe the result. bw is a binary image served as a mask. I2 is an extraction of the hexagon. And I assigned a constant to all the pixel values of I2(inside the hexagon). The constant is the mean pixel value inside the hexagon (mean(I2(:))). –  lennon310 Dec 29 '13 at 17:10
    
you may need to tune the parameters in Ed = imdilate(E,strel('disk',15)); increase the disk size(15) or decrease it to observe the changes in your hough/corner detection result until you correctly get all the 6 corners. –  lennon310 Dec 29 '13 at 17:11
    
Ya, I tuned it further. Tried eroding it a little also. I'm getting the six intersecting lines when I perform hough, houghpeaks and houghlines. They are not completely accurate but some more fine tuning would do. Thanks a lot! Also, can you tell me how can I extract the intersection points of these lines? –  alasin Dec 29 '13 at 17:20
    
well if you already have detected the corners, you get their coordinates, and those are the intersection points. In houghlines, I think they are all stored in lines.point1, lines.point2. –  lennon310 Dec 29 '13 at 17:23

I think you could implement the approach presented below in Matlab. It was implemented in Java, using Marvin image processing framework.

Edge detection (Prewitt):

Find the cornes algorithmically.

  1. Trace a line in the center of the image, from the top to the bottom. When find a white pixel, find the start and end points of the line.
  2. Trace a line in the center of the image, from the bottom to the top. When find a white pixel, find the start and end points of the line.
  3. The middle corners are at the lowest and highest x coordinates of white pixels.
