I tried the following

template<class T>
T fromString(const String& str)
    return toInt<T>(str.begin());

const String& fromString<const String&>(const String& str)
    {return str;}

double fromString<double>(const String& str)
    {return toDouble(str.begin());}

const char_t* fromString<const char_t*>(const String& str)
    {return str.begin();}

However, it seems like the compiler tries to call the first version, which only works on integers and has explicit instantiations:

In function `Herbs::Stringbase<char16_t> Herbs::fromString<Herbs::Stringbase<char16_t> >(Herbs::Stringbase<char16_t> const&)':
...: undefined reference to `Herbs::Stringbase<char16_t> Herbs::toInt<Herbs::Stringbase<char16_t> >(char16_t const*)'

The function is called like this

template<class T>
T itemFirstGet() const
    {return fromString<T>(m_items[0]);}

m_items is an array of strings in a class.

fromString<Herbs::Stringbase<char16_t>> is not the same thing as fromString<const Herbs::Stringbase<char16_t>&>, you should probably specialize on the decayed type. –  Casey Jan 7 at 16:19

You might delegate your function overloads/specializations to structures and leave the general case unimplemented:
