I have recently downloaded Spark and I am attempting to access my first cluster through Spark-ec2. I used the commands:

export AWS_ACCESS_KEY_ID=<myid>
export AWS_SECRET_ACCESS_KEY=<mykey>
./spark-ec2 -k my-key-pair -i my-key-pair.pem -s 2 -t m1.small -w 360 launch Spark

And the startup appears to run without error. However when I run:

./spark-ec2 -k my-key-pair -i my-key-pair.pem login Spark

it returns:

Searching for existing cluster Spark...
ERROR: Could not find any existing cluster

I cannot find any documentation on this error. Any help on how to proceed would be greatly appreciated.

Your ./spark-ec2 commands use the cluster name Spark but the error message uses the cluster name Spark_1. Are you sure that you specified the right cluster name? What version of Spark are you using? –  Josh Rosen Jan 16 at 20:20
    
Yes, sorry for the mix up but I changed the name as part of my troubleshooting but to no avail. I changed it back for simplicity before posting but copied and pasted the old error message. I have updated the question for clarity. –  LFoos24 Jan 16 at 21:16
    
Does the EC2 administration console show any instances running in the Spark-master or Spark-workers security groups? Note that EC2 uses separate web UIs for different regions, so make sure you're looking at the region that you launched the cluster in. –  Josh Rosen Jan 16 at 23:30
    
Also, could you post the log of messages printed while the cluster was starting up? –  Josh Rosen Jan 16 at 23:31
    
Logs added. EC2 shows me 2 slaves and a master in the US-East region. I didn't navigate out of the folder where Spark-ec2 lives or change any config files so I don't think I changed anything that would cause me to point to a different region. –  LFoos24 Jan 17 at 2:05

Your cluster is definitely running, since I can browse to the Spark master web UI at http://yourMasterHostname:8080.

It looks like you're using Spark 0.8.0, which is affected by a (rare) bug where spark-ec2 may erroneously see empty security groups and fail to find an existing cluster. This was fixed in a pull request, but the patch hasn't been backported to any of the Spark 0.8.x releases.

In the meantime, you can manually apply the fix to spark-ec2, since it only changes four lines.

I had the same problem with spark 0.9.1 and updated sparc-ec2 script. So after successful deploy I tried to login:

./spark-ec2 -k my-key-pair -i my-key-pair.pem login MY_SPARK_CLUSTER

and this gives error:

Searching for existing cluster Spark...
ERROR: Could not find any existing cluster

The problem was that my cluster is in region eu-west-1, but default region is us-east-1. So while login you should add --region key:

./spark-ec2 -k my-key-pair -i my-key-pair.pem login MY_SPARK_CLUSTER --region=YOUR_REGION
