Debug and check the value of groupPosition when getChildrenCount is called. If the title is not exist in the HashMap yet, the get operation will return null, and therefore throw NullPointerException when calling size(). – DatVM Jan 19 '14 at 4:29
    
I think mListDataHeader don't have an don't have an element at the groupPosition where the crash occurs. – Binoy Babu Jan 19 '14 at 4:30
    
@BinoyBabu In your case, it would throw IndexOutOfRangeException, not NullPointerException, unless listDataHeader itself is null. – DatVM Jan 19 '14 at 4:34
    
@DatVM I know listDataHeader isn't null because the compressed list populates. The NPE comes when I try to expand a list item – WizardKnight Jan 19 '14 at 4:36

Solution:

listDataHeader is an arrayList of objects. my problem was I didn't realize that "listDataChild.get(key)" was asking for a key because I was working originialy from a tutorial. I changed listDataHeader.get(groupPosition) to listDataHeader.get(groupPosition).getName() and it's all good now.
