I install sonar in my local machines, default configuration. then I run the example as follows:

how does Sonar use this file, and what does Sonar do exactly?

where is the 60.00% coverage result computed? during ant test or during ant sonar?

JaCoCo is used during the <junit/> task itself. When executed, JaCoCo instruments the class files used in the test with the coverage information. This produces a jacaco.exec file. This file is then used to generate the code coverage report.

There's usually a <jacoco:report/> task that takes the jacoco.exec file and generates either a text file, a HTML page, or an XML file with the coverage information in it. This is probably what Sonar uses for its analysis.

Of course, it's hard without seeing the build.xml file how things work.

so, if I understood correctly, sonar is only reading the jacoco.exec file and producing the report? but it does not seem to be the case; it seems that sonar is doing something more; for instance, sonar requires the classpath, and it complains if it cannot find and read the classes. –  David Portabella Jan 21 at 7:55
When producing the report from the jacoco.exec file, you need the classpath because the report process references the original none-instrumented classfiles and the source if you want the source referenced in the report. I see that sonar is using the jacoco.exec directly. –  David W. Jan 21 at 15:37

Yes, the coverage is done during the <JUnit> test. The coverage at a mere 60% could be due to several things. It could be that certain code that's really difficult to test like catch code isn't being tested. Jacoco can show you the code that's tested and untested if you include the source in the path to the source too. You can try using the jacoco:report task. This will produce an HTML report with links back to the source code. –  David W. Jan 21 at 20:56
