We're developing an app in Windows 8.1 environment. I wanted to implement the Bing Speech Recognition Control. (See this)

The icon is showing up and I've implemented the code like this solution.

Here's what I did in code behind

When I click the button, I get an error complaining about an invalid media type.

Where should I look for the source of this error?

Was having the same issue and came across a great geospatial blog from Microsoft employee Johannes Kebeck http://jkebeck.wordpress.com/ and in his post dated November 16, 2013, he mentioned having to set the device capabilities for microphone in your package.appxmanifest (which I had already figured out) but the key was that you also have to allow three DLLs to be activatable.

To do this you just have to manually edit the file (right-click, Open With..., Select XML Text Editor) then add the following below capabilities:

Save, recompile and your speech recognition will now work.

  • Thanks, that may be a solution but I'm affraid I wont be able to test that. Bing Speech Control isn't available in my country yet (Belgium). Strange tho that I can't even use the English version instead of Dutch. I couldn't fully register my Azure Marketplace account to the app... Microsoft is so slow in releasing their resources!

  • You could always look at the System.Speech namespace which does both recognizer and synthesis and is free (part of .NET framework). It does dictation and grammar tree based listening and both at the same time. Code is almost the same. Works fine under Windows 8/8.1 just won't be able to do store app as that library appears to not be available to them, hence the Bing Speech Control. Basically, similar, but limit to number of queries and need internet for recognition. I went with System.Speech because I don't want requiring an internet connection and am ok with a WPF app instead of store app. Feb 2, 2014 at 4:39
