I am trying to overlay transparent mov or flv over an image.

I am open to both options using ffmpeg or avconv.

here is my cmd:

However the video generated does not have background image and have white color instead. please help..

ffmpeg vs "ffmpeg"

As you can see in your console output there is a conversion occurring from rgba to yuv420p which is probably losing your alpha channel. I see no way to avoid this using avconv or the fake "ffmpeg" available in the repository (these are both from Libav; a fork of FFmpeg). Getting ffmpeg from FFmpeg

Now that the confusion is out of the way you should get a real ffmpeg. You can either:

If you're too lazy to do anything then just do this:

Note when you execute the binary you just downloaded don't forget to prefix it with ./, as in ./ffmpeg (or use the full path) or you may run the fake "ffmpeg" instead.


You can use the option format=rgb in the overlay video filter; otherwise the default of yuv420p will be used:

  • Use -filter_complex instead of -vf for complex filtergraphs.

  • All filtering should occur within one filtergraph, so you should move yadif to your other filters. This gives you the advantage of controlling exactly when yadif should be used.

  • 1280x720 will scale to 720x405 while keeping aspect. The -1 in the scale example automatically determines the value 405. I then added crop to remove the extra 5 pixels to avoid the slight squishing that will occur if you simply just scale to a specific size.

  • You can also probably then remove -pix_fmt rgba now that everything will remain within RGB. If you find that you still need it then use the format video filter instead, such as format=rgba, so you can control exactly when the filter should be implemented.

  • I prefer to explicitly name the output link label in the filtergraph (as [out] in this example, but you can use almost any arbitrary name) and then map it so the default behavior does not give any surprises.

  • -y is a global option which should be declared before input options.
