I am using a query for searching a database :

As mentioned in our earlier question Fulltext index and search speed we have some speed issues with this one and are going to look into Sphinx for this.
Since the main cause for the speed issues is the ORDERBY in this query, without this one the query is fast enough, we have an extra question concerning query optimization. We were adviced to look into Sphinx but to avoid that we dive fully into Sphinx without investigating the options to optimize the query itself these extra questions:
We need the ordering since users want to order by upload date and other fields. However when executing an explain the update index isn't used. Is it correct that you cannot use multiple indexes on 1 table in 1 query? The explain says on the T_searchdata table only the fulltext index on DATA is used. Is this correct or should it be able to also use the UPDATE index for speeding up the orderby on UPDATE (which we create and which is a date field with btree index).
Is there another (faster) way to achieve an orderby action? We import the data into an php environment so maybe in this area? Suppose not since in that case we need to lose the limit of the query and retrieve all the data (250k rows max at the moment) but anybody with experience who can advice in this area? Or other ways to work this out?
In case of using Sphinx, will we be able to use the attributes to do sorting? So won't w get the same issues as with orderby in our current query? I assume Sphinx is able to handle this much faster using the attributes? Is this a correct assumption?
