A simple question. Say a script named "unpack.py" puts "inputfile.gz" to stdout instead of creating an "output.gz" with this following command:-

python unpack.py inputfile.gz

Is it possible to create "output.gz" by simply redirecting stdout by using the following command?

python unpack.py inputfile.gz > outputfile.gz

After redirecting, does "inputfile.gz" == "outputfile.gz" ?

It does seems to create "outputfile.gz". Checked with file it seems to be same before and after.

$ file core.gz 
core.gz: gzip compressed data, was "core.cpio", from Unix, last modified: Sat Feb 18 22:22:16 2012, max compression
[sundar@localhost multibootusb]$ file core-redirect.gz 
core-redirect.gz: gzip compressed data, was "core.cpio", from Unix, last modified: Sat Feb 18 22:22:16 2012, max compression

However, when i try to extract again both files, the redirected file does not seem to work as expected and throws an error gzip: core-redirect.gz: unexpected end of file

$ gunzip core-redirect.gz 
gzip: core-redirect.gz: unexpected end of file
$ gunzip core.gz

Actual problem of mine as follows...

I have been trying to list and extract an iso using a python script found on the github written by barneygale. The actual script is here:-

The script is almost close to what I want. It can list an iso. For example:-

$ python ./iso9660.py aTinyCore-4.3.iso 

However, it does not support the direct extraction of iso files. Instead, it writes all the data/ binary/ file to stdout if path of file residing in an iso is provided.

For example:-

$ python ./iso9660.py aTinyCore-4.3.iso /BOOT/ISOLINUX/ISOLINUX.CFG
display boot.msg
default tc

label tc
    kernel /boot/vmlinuz
    append initrd=/boot/core.gz quiet cde

F4 f4

My question now is that, is it possible to write those stdout to a file(if stdout content is a file)/ data(if stdout content is a data)/ binary (if stdout content is a binary) so that content of the iso can be extracted? Does python tread stdout of file and binary as same?

Any lead out of the issue is highly appreciated.

Of course you can write binary data to stdout (that's what gunzip --to-stdout does), as stdout is "just a file". But you have to use sys.stdout.write(), not print(). –  doukremt Feb 18 at 19:34
