I've attempted to create a custom anti-aliased JLabel, but my text remains rigid. Why doesn't this work?

The answers to similar questions include more verbose solutions, but I want to know why this isn't working.

When I have the font size at 100, I get the following output, which doesn't appear to be anti-aliased:

100pt font

Setting the font to 150, it suddenly appears to be anti-aliased:

250pt font

Does the super set the rendering hints itself? –  Others Feb 19 '14 at 2:21
    
Well, rendering hints are a property of Graphics2D objects, and I'm passing that object to the parent class to be used. –  Joel A. Christophel Feb 19 '14 at 2:25
    
Well the super could overide the hints by setting them itself... Can you also check your system supports antialiasing? –  Others Feb 19 '14 at 2:28
    
It's likely that the rendering performed by the look and feel is setting it's own rendering hints –  MadProgrammer Feb 19 '14 at 2:32

@AndrewThompson as we all know, anti-aliasing is a story-without-happy-ending :-) For simple text rendering, it's best not to fiddle with the rendering hints because it's too tricky to get it right for each OS/LAF/hardware. Actually, I even do it the other way round: whenever I need some text rendered, I use a JLabel and stamp it onto the graphics (vs. setting the hints and call text.drawText) So I'm wondering why the default rendering comes out so badly in your context? –  kleopatra Feb 19 '14 at 8:44

Conclusion

The SmoothLabel supports/enforces anti-aliased text in all PLAFs tested. The only PLAF here that does not already use anti-aliased text is CDE/Motif.
