# Python User Input Rating System [closed]

I have been given the following assignment but I can't seem to solve it without using brute force methods. Basically I need to create a program that will take a users inputted rating (numbers 1 -10) and display it in the following format:

Rating for Movie #1: 2

**

This needs to be done for multiple movies (10+).

The exact assignment is as follows:

Write a program that will display a user’s movie rating. The application should allow the user to enter the ratings for five different movies. Each rating should be a number from 1 through 10 only (do not accept other numbers). The application should graph the ratings using a horizontal bar chart consisting of five rows, one row for each movie. Each row should contain from one to 10 plus signs (*). The number of plus signs depends on the movie’s rating.

Any help is appreciated. I'm a complete novice at this.

The first thing to note is that the logic for each movie is exactly the same. So you should consider using a slightly generalized piece of logic that applies to the all, in a loop such as `for movie in range(1, 11):`. Also note that `"*" * 5` is equal to `"*****"` and think of a better way of generating the string output. If you want to keep all the movie scores then append each one to a list that starts out empty. –  holdenweb Feb 24 '14 at 19:01

I think that the teacher is expecting him to learn matplotlib in order to build a bar chart. I suppose he should also build a dictionary with 5 movie titles and the ratings for each movie. –  sabbahillel Feb 24 '14 at 19:03

I doubt the teach expects any graphics to be used, which is why the specification asks for rows of asterisks. A list should suffice, why would a dict be necessary? –  holdenweb Feb 24 '14 at 19:15

I wont give you the full answer but here are some hints:

Python has the ability for functions for repeated code:

If you want to execute a piece of code `x` times (say..5 times for example), try using a `for` loop:

You need to make sure the number entered is an integer. What happens if we try and convert not an integer to an `int()`?

So lets `try` that and catch the `ValueError` if it isn't a number:

As pointed out by `@holdenweb` below we want to display the error message to the user but also address the error. Using a little bit of recursion we can wrap this in a function and call it again if we have an invalid value:

How do we know that the user is inputting the correct number? We don't want a negative number or them to be allowed to input `1,000,000` for Gunday:

As far as error checking is concerned note, however, that simply printing out a message does not constitute error handling, since without special logic the program continues to execute with a string value for `movie`, which will lead to trouble later on. Catching an exceptional condition is insufficient, as you need to request a new input from the user in the case of an error. –  holdenweb Feb 24 '14 at 19:19
@holdenweb - fair point, though this is by no means supposed to be a bomb proof example. More an example of different techniques that can be used in combination to solve the problem. If stricter error checking and recursive input -> check -> fail -> input are needed this is up to the OP (/their teacher...) –  Ewan Feb 24 '14 at 19:31
Fair enough, but while code needn't be bomb-proof (particularly in education, where it's good to focus on the main purpose) I believe students should be discouraged from writing code that specifically fails. If an illegal value is entered you can be sure an inexplicable (to the user) exception will appear. I was simply trying to point out that detecting an error is not sufficient, and neither is reporting it - you also have to ensure correct program flow. I'm quite happy to let the OP decide whether this advice needs to be incorporated in his homework. –  holdenweb Feb 25 '14 at 20:18
