I have a simple daemon that boils down to

and an init.d script which is just the original skeleton with $NAME, $DAEMON and $DAEMON_ARGS adjusted. If I kill the process via it's PID it receives a SIGTERM and terminates properly, however if I try to stop the service (which is set to send TERM first by default) the command hangs and the process is killed without ever receiving SIGTERM.

What do I have to do/change so that the process is terminated correctly (either on the shell side or on the C++ side)

The modified skeleton (only NAME and DAEMON_ARGS are changed in comparison to the original Ubuntu init.d skeleton):

Your daemon does not create a pidfile, and neither does start-stop-daemon. I guess the first line

start-stop-daemon --stop --quiet --retry=TERM/30/KILL/5 --pidfile $PIDFILE --name $NAME

does nothing, because the --pidfile process selection criterion is never satisfied, but the second line

start-stop-daemon --stop --quiet --oknodo --retry=0/30/KILL/5 --exec $DAEMON

kills the daemon with SIGKILL, because here the --pidfile option is not included.

You should fix your daemon to create a pidfile.

Ok, but how do I create a pidfile correctly? adding --make-pidfile to the start-stop-daemon options does not work –  Joe Mar 6 at 13:32
    
The --make-pidfile option for start-stop-daemon is just a workaround for broken daemons, and as the manpage says, it doesn't help with forking daemons. Just let the daemon itself create it, that's the correct way to do it. –  user2719058 Mar 6 at 14:13
    
Obviously. I rather meant how does one do that correctly in the daemon? Just an fopen, fprintf and fclose? –  Joe Mar 6 at 14:17
    
Should be good enough. :) Just be sure to do it after forking. If you're kind, you may also want to unlink it on exit. :) –  user2719058 Mar 6 at 14:31
