I run my program in parallel on a single server (Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4770 CPU @ 3.40GHz). This server has 4 cores, each of which has additional hyper-thread, i.e., 8 cores/threads in total.

I found that when the degree of parallelism of my program is less than 4, it can obtain almost linear speedup (see the right figure). But, when greater than 4, the speedup is aggravated. So, I suspect that it is because of the FLoat point Unit. This server only have 4 float point units. I want to interpret my experiment results by counting the FLOPS (FLoating-point Operations Per Second). So, how could I count the FLOPS? Are they any other ways to interpret this result? thanks

You're likely not going to be able to count FLOPS using native Matlab code as it depends on many optimized libraries that take advantage of specific hardware (e.g., SIMD). You could try the toolbox suggested in this answer, but I don't know how reliable it is. –  horchler Mar 16 '14 at 21:20

Have a read up on what hyperthreading is - You may have 2 hardware threads per core, but you still only have 1 FPU between them - for particularly intensive workloads, more than 4 threads may actually make things slower due to context-switching. –  Notlikethat Mar 16 '14 at 22:23
    
you are correct, two hyperthreads per core. If you use the context-switching to interpret the speedup, but, why is the value of context-switch higher when I use two parallelism? ie, 39,038 context-switches and 40,231 context-switches –  afancy Mar 16 '14 at 23:11
