I created my own custom SlideShow, which is a really wide UIScrollView containing some UIImageViews. It moves between the images on a timer, or when the user swipes. In IB, I added a UIScrollView and set the class to SlideShow. Then I populate it in the view controller class.

When I populated the slides (by calling configureSlideShow) with bundled images in viewWillAppear:, everything was great. I then added the ability to populate the images based on a web request. In this case, configureSlideShow gets called by the callback for the network response. I start with the SlideShow hidden (set in IB), and a spinning UIActivityIndicatorView right behind it. At the end of configureSlideShow it unhides the SlideShow. For some reason I can't determine, the SlideShow does not appear and start running when it should. Sometimes it shows up in ten seconds, sometimes it goes more than a minute without showing up. The whole time, I can see the UIActivityIndicatorView. I've put log messages in and determined the network connection is completing quickly, the image sizing and loading is completing quickly, and the configureSlideShow method is completing quickly.

I think it has something to do with the view lifecycle and display. I have a tab bar and navigation bar in the app, and if I switch tabs and come back, or push a new view controller and go back, the SlideShow displays. I've tried calling setNeedsDisplay on every object in various locations, but nothing helps. Any suggestions?
