What is a good command to monitor a Postfix installation on a linux server? It should be one command that can be run from a command prompt in an SSH session and returns information about whether the postfix process is active and the size of the relevant mail queues.

This may not appear to be on-topic for Stack Overflow (Maybe better for Server Fault?) but it does relate to software development. At the time, I was creating a complex mail sender application that used multiple MTAs for mail delivery. If the mail queue on one server grew too large, then it should prefer other, less busy MTAs. Therefore, the controlling application needed a way to maintain an SSH connection to each MTA and periodically monitor its status.

If the monitoring need was simply for administrative purposes, there are plenty of GUI tools that do that much more easily.

You can use the command line programs that come with Postfix:

  • mailq : shows which queues have mail being 'processed'
  • postqueue -p : is what mailq actually references
  • postqueue -f : flushes all queued mail, immediately trying to get it delivered
  • ps aux : shows running processes on the server, look for things like:
    • smtpd
    • proxymap
    • anvil
    • trivial-rewrite
    • qmgr
    • pickup
    • showq

What you find with the ps command will vary depending on how you set things up.

In order of preference:

The best way is to send heartbeat messages through the mail server and monitor their arrival at the destination.

Use mailq and qshape (shipped with recent postfix distributions) to monitor queues.

You can check that smtpd is listening and returning a banner using netcat (options to netcat vary by OS; these are for linux):

nc -w 1 localhost 25 </dev/null

The following will report the number of processes for each postfix daemon, grouped by master (multiple masters if you have multiple postfix instances).

In addition to Bryan Rehbein's answer above, here's a script I use to monitor postfix queue lengths. All it does is send an email alert once a queue grows beyond X messages in size. The alert is sent using msmtp (a tiny command line smtp client) so it bypasses the local postfix installation (which you can't rely on to get your alert out in a timely fashion if its queues are growing...)

Also worth mentioning that msmtp supports TLS/SSL and specifying a username/password. So, for example, you could slightly rejig the script to send alert emails via a gmail account if you wanted. –  corford May 27 '12 at 1:19
