Im currently coding an app that has a Navigation Drawer. I want a map in one of the fragments.

My MainActivity has the method selectItem to switch between framgents.

Here is my MainActivity.java:

Here the Layout of the fragment that has to be switched to at the beginning: fragment_position.xml:

If I want to start my app, I get an NullPointerException in this Line:

map = ((SupportMapFragment) getFragmentManager().findFragmentById(R.id.map)).getMap();

I think the problem is in the activity_main.xml or the fragment_position.xml.

If I want to start an other fragment (no map) it runs perfectly.

I had a similar problem which was solved by simply waiting for the map to be loaded. It sometimes takes some time for it to properly load. Try something like this:

Handler handler = new Handler();
handler.postDelayed(new Runnable() {

   @Override
   public void run() {
       // Get map as you do in your code
       if(map != null) {
         // Map loaded, precede as usual
       } else {
         // Keep delaying until the map is loaded.
         handler.postDelayed(this, 200);
       }
   }
}, 200);

A quick search found stackoverflow.com/questions/19219255/… - seems like you can try to get the map in onActivityCreated instead. I will try that in my app! :) –  Redbit Apr 1 '14 at 16:21
    
thanks for your ideas. i've tried both alternatives but they wasn't the solution :( i'm still getting a nullPointerException at map = ((SupportMapFragment) getFragmentManager().findFragmentById(R.id.map)).getMap();. –  captainchaos91 Apr 1 '14 at 17:33
    
After spending more time in debugging, i found out that in map = ((SupportMapFragment)getFragmentManager().findFragmentById(R.id.map)).getMap(); or map = ((SupportFragment)getActivity().getSupportFragmentManager().findFragmentById(R.i‌​d.map)).getMap(); the method findFragmentById(R.id.map) returns null. The methods in front of that call (getActivity, getSupportFragmentManager) run well. So it can't be up to getActivity(), getSupportFragmentManager() or getMap() –  captainchaos91 Apr 1 '14 at 19:10
