I use the following pattern to generically create specialized instances of a base view mdoel according to the concrete model instance:

The idea is to instanciate them via MEF so there is no need to know the conrcete ViewModel Type, and the specializations can be defined in some other assemblies and plugged into the program at runtime.

However, I get an AmbiguousMatchException somewhere deep inside the wpf framework when trying to bind to the Model property (indeed, not the binding itself fails but some code in MeasureOverride tries to access the property via reflection):

Therefore, the answer to use some user-defined function which searches the inheritance chain, e.g. as proposed in the thread AmbiguousMatchException - Type.GetProperty - C# Reflection, does not apply here.

How could the pattern be alternatively implemented so that I can access the specialized Model property from inside the specialized viewmodel class, but also enable accessing the base property from the base viewmodel? Renaming the property looks ugly, as it points to the same object anyway!

This is a terrible idea... view models are not all the same. They are used to provide exactly the data and functionality required by each view. Your 'pattern' breaks this idea and therefore renders its use somewhat pointless. –  Sheridan Apr 4 '14 at 13:53
    
Not all viewmodels are the same, but there can be multiple related viewmodels: e.g.: i have list of different devices and want to generate a list of viewmodels to edit the specicfic parameters the specific device - how can I generate a viewmodel for the corresponding device - especially if there may be multiply devices which are not known at compile time? –  LionAM Apr 4 '14 at 15:11
