When testing in mocha, I encountered some bizarre behavior which I'd like to be resolved. It seems like you cannot have an asynchronous function between any describe-it blocks. Similarly, if an asynchronous function contains a describe-it block, that code will never run.

To be clear, is there any way to either run an "it" inside of my own asynchronous function, or to have a describe-it block inside my own asynchronous function, WITHOUT using before or beforeEach hooks?

The goal is to generate our test cases elsewhere, store them all in an array, and then loop through that array, calling an "it" block for each test case (the below examples don't have any loops, I just wrote these up to give examples of what's happening).

First, here's my own async function (saved in a file called "sample-mocha-functions"):

var stringifyFile  = function(fileToRead, callback) {
  fs.readFile(fileToRead, function(err, data) {
    data = data.toString();
    callback(data);
  });

exports.stringifyFile = stringifyFile;

And here is some mocha code which I would like to work...but it doesn't:

var func = require('./sample-mocha-functions'),
  should = require('should');

var inputFile = "./read-file.txt";

// this does not work...no tests are run
describe("Read in file", function () {
  func.stringifyFile(inputFile, function(outputFile) {
    it(" should exist", function(done) {
      outputFile.should.exist;
      done();
    });
  });
});

// output:
// 0 passing (0ms)  

Here, I try to run the describe-it block inside of stringifyFile. Nothing happens...unless you have ANOTHER describe-it block which contains stringifyFile:

//  This chunk of code won't fire (and hence no tests are run)
//+ unless we include the describe-it block below.
func.stringifyFile(inputFile, function(outputFile) {
  describe("Read in file", function () {
    it(" should exist", function(done) {
      outputFile.should.exist;

Here's a mocha test which is passing (to prove to you there are no errors), but again I want stringifyFile to run BEFORE the it (or the describe-it):

var func = require('./sample-mocha-functions'),
  should = require('should');

var inputFile = "./read-file.txt";

// this works properly
describe("Read in file", function () {
  it(" should exist", function(done) {
    func.stringifyFile(inputFile, function(outputFile) {
      outputFile.should.exist;

read-file is just a file that says "this is the file I want to read".

I realize this is a contrived example, but a) I really can't show any more code since there is sensitive work-related info inside, and b) the point is made regardless if the examples are silly.

What you are trying to do cannot be done in the way you are trying to do it due to how Mocha operates. As I've described in this answer:

What you get has to do with how Mocha discovers your test. Basically Mocha does this:

  1. Read all your test files and execute them. The callbacks passed to describe are executed right away. The callbacks passed to it and to the hooks (before, beforeEach, etc.) are recorded for later execution.

  2. Mocha executes what it has recorded for later execution (according to some sensible order which is not important here).

The first phase is where you are having trouble. Mocha provides no facility to wait for asynchronous operations while it is discovering your tests (during the first phase). Contrarily to what Esteban says in his answer, there is no done callback you can use like you can do with it to tell Mocha that the callback is asynchronous. And tricks like using a setTimeout call to try to make Mocha wait for an asynchronous operation is also going to fail, again due to how Mocha is designed.

I've got some suites where test creation is dependent on reading files. I just use the synchronous version of the fs calls. Otherwise, I suspect you'd have to use Mocha programmatically to perform the asynchronous computations before you start Mocha. You'd make an object that contains the result of the computation available to your Mocha script so that the Mocha script can use it synchronously to create the test suite.
