I am getting an error at if(HSSFCell.isCellDateFormatted(cell)) statement: "The method isCellDateFormatted(HSSFCell) in the type HSSFDateUtil is not applicable for the arguments (XSSFCell)".

Here is my code:

I think the problem is that you are using workbook = new XSSFWorkbook(fis); and trying to check it with HSSFDateUtil.isCellDateFormatted(cell). HSSF is for .xls and XSSF is for .xlsx. More info here XSSF POI is cell date
