I am working on an Encrypted E-mail application based on Java. I'm pretty new to cryptography and such high level programming in general. I have read the Javadoc and pretty much all similar threads on this site, but still cannot implement a viable solution.

I have generated the RSA key pairs successfully. But, I need to encrypt the Private key with a pass phrase and AES 128 for additional safety against theft of the private key.According to the following code I've implemented, the decrypted key differs from the original one and thus fails its purpose.

Here is what I have already done:

  1. Load the Private key into String variable "text", encrypt it and convert it into base 64 form for saving into a .txt / .aes file so that i can later decrypt it. Here, the "key" variable is a String which is my 16 length pass phrase for 128 bit AES.

    cipher = Cipher.getInstance("AES/ECB/PKCS5Padding");
    SecretKeySpec secretKey = new SecretKeySpec(key.getBytes(), "AES");
    cipher.init(Cipher.ENCRYPT_MODE, secretKey);
    String encryptedString = Base64.encodeBase64String(cipher.doFinal(text.getBytes()));
  2. Decrypt the saved base64 String "encryptedString" back to original form. Here "key" is the pass phrase and "text" is the saved base64 encrypted string.

    cipher = Cipher.getInstance("AES/ECB/PKCS5PADDING");
    SecretKeySpec secretKey = new SecretKeySpec(key.getBytes(), "AES");
    cipher.init(Cipher.DECRYPT_MODE, secretKey);
    String decryptedString = new String(cipher.doFinal(Base64.decodeBase64(text)));

I'm assuming that I've made some fundamental mistake in implementing this relatively easy problem. I've been trying to find a solution for almost a day now. Any help is welcome :)

P.S. This is not a duplicate of Encrypt RSA Private Key with AES 256 in Java since it does not use custom pass phrase and is based on AES 256.

Except from the design mistakes (using ECB mode, treating a password as it was a secret key, using the default character encoding) I don't see anything that should lead to issues. Are you running these on the same system? Have you compared the binary values before they are handled by the AES algorithm? –  owlstead Apr 20 at 21:01
