Have an inline sql udf When called with variable

  • WHY AND HOW CAN I RESOLVE THIS TO PERFORM WITH EQUAL RESPONSE TIME WHEN VARIABLES USED INSTEAD OF LITERALS

Try

DBCC FREEPROCCACHE

before performing any more speed tests. Second, use default values to fool the parameter sniffing optimization

There is no difference for the function if the values come from variables or not. They are only values when they arrive at the function, and the code in the function can't tell the difference even it wanted to.

The result from function calls are cached based on the values of the parameters, which is the likely reason for your result.

If you are calling the function several times with different values, the function will be executed each time. If you are calling the function several times with the same value, the function will only be executed the first time, for the following calls the result will be taken from the cache.

If you run the function twice, first with variables and then with literal values that are the same as in the variables, the function will only run the first time. The second time it will just get the result from the cache, which is of course a lot faster. If you rerun both tests you will get the shorter time for both. If you swap the calls and reruns the test with different values, you will get the opposite times from the first test.

@Guffa I ran the function with same variable parameter repeatedly and it takes 9 secs always. And running same with litaral repeatedly takes 1 sec. Will add the function body to queston.. Thanks –  TonyP Feb 24 '10 at 22:13
    
@TonyP: Are you sure that you run the tests with the same values? The code that you posted is full of test code setting different values overriding the original values, and it's not even a function any more as the declaration is commented out... –  Guffa Feb 24 '10 at 22:57

Is the data type of the parameters supposed to be NCHAR or NVARCHAR instead of CHAR and VARCHAR? I've made mistakes like that in the past, where SQL would have to convert the data type, which means an evaluation would occur and indexes would be skipped.
