I’m having some issues with maven regarding CI. I’m using Jenkins and Artifactory all setup using normal defaults, and everything is talking and working properly. The issues have more to do with proper process and plugin interaction.

  • I need a parent build and settings.xml file that our corporate projects will descend from so the individual project POM files are as clean as possible.
  • Jenkins needs to be able to build every hour and each night, if the build is successful deploy its automatic release candidate “RC” artifacts to the development environment.
  • Developers need to be able check in versions of a project fixing a specific problem and tag it.
  • Developers need to be able to release a build to integration, and rename/tag those.
  • Developers need to be able perform a release of those change orders, and rename/tag those.
  • Artifactory will to hold the repository. The various artifacts might reside in different SVN repositories.

My tags look like this: co.54321.1.201407231245 which becomes int.54321.1.201407231245 which becomes rel.201407231245 eventually.

Q1: I believe since I am using Artifactory I don’t need to specify the relative path of the parent pom.xml. Correct?

A1: Seems to be a problem if the scm for the parent pom isn't the same as the scm for the child pom. Fixed by using a developerConnection (see Q5/A5 below).

Q2: Is defining the children modules foolish and unnecessary if the various tags created for the children have nothing to do really with the parent or each other – this is not a multi-module pom. Should I leave the modules out of the parent POM?

A2: Leaving the kids out seems smart. Or at least more manageable, and less likely to result in partially committed pieces requiring manual intervention and rollback.

Q3: If I put the modules in the parent pom, the children seem to have issues when I do release:prepare release:perform, claiming the parent version does not exist in SVN.

A3: I have given up on this see A2 above.

Q4: When I do a tag, the scm is changed in the pom.xml file. That’s ok, just not what I was expecting, so the idea is I am now working with that “tag”. Can I continue to work with the trunk instead?

A4: Tag is unnecessary for the scm (I believe), maven-release-plugin's tag is sufficient. The POM is only changed on the checked in artifact. (removing -SNAPSHOT and advancing the number).

Q5: What is the difference between developerConnection and connection in the scm section? What determines which one is selected?

A5: A developer connection is a connection that can be used to retrieve the pom artifacts from version control - it may be where you get the parent pom.xml for instance if it is in a different svn repository from the one the child artifact lives.

Q6: What happens if I leave the “tag” tag out of the scm section? Should I always have a tag?

A6: You don't need to use the "tag". (see A4 above).

Q7: If the parent pom is changed with a new release I’m going to want that, is it advisable to have it set to “RELEASE” in the trunk, I assume when I do release:perform that the version will get replaced with the actual version used. Correct?

A7: No. Use the actual version, and when you are ready to upgrade use versions:update-parent, which will change the child pom's version to the latest released parent pom version.

Anyway thanks, I know some of these may be judgement calls, but I am hoping to end up with some nice simple commands for performing releases, creating change order tags, promoting a tag to integration and a release, etc.

I'm ideally trying to come up with some simple commands that can be used for most of our normal activities:

  • For ordinary checkin, updating the parent pom and latest-releases of dependencies: mvn clean versions:update-parent versions:use-latest-releases install scm:checkin -Dmessage="SVN comment."
  • To update child POMs with the latest version of the parent POM and create a new release: mvn clean versions:update-parent install scm:checkin -Dmessage="Updating pom." -Dtype="rel" release:prepare release:perform -B
  • For jenkins, build, create javadoc and source for the release and then increment the version number )(without asking any questions so I use -B:) EX: mvn clean install scm:checkin release:prepare release:perform -Dmessage="update versions" -Dsvntag="JENKINS" -B
  • For ordinary change order or int build use -Dtype="co" or -Dtype="int" with the number and revision. EX: mvn clean install scm:checkin release:prepare release:perform -Dmessage="update versions" -Dtype="co" -Dnumber="54321" -Drev="1" -B
  • Or specify the entire svntag at one time: mvn clean install scm:checkin release:prepare release:perform -Dsvntag="co.12345.1" -B
  • For releases just specify the -Dtype=rel without -Dnumber and -Drev the number and revision. Tag Result: rel.201404161430

Q8: Things seem to go wrong with the parent having references to the child and then the cleanup is a mess, I've seen some advice that the deploy tag may be the way to go, and not to use the release tag because of the messy rollback, is that good advice?

A8: I think that is old and invalid advice, the release tag seams fine as long as the parent doesn't have references to the child.

Q9: What about the versions plugin? Should I use that at all?

A9: Yes! Use it with versions:update-parent and versions:use-latest-releases

Q10: What about the enforcer plugin to enforce no snapshots in releases? Should I use that, or does the release plugin do that already?

A10: Doesn't seem necessary, the release plugin only uses actual releases, not snapshots.

Q11: If we use "Spring" or "Logging" as separate poms the parent will inherit to separate concerns, is that a good idea, or does it just make everything more complicated?

A11: ???

Q12: What about different supporting different JDK's, is there an easy way to do that?

A12: Yes. Define a JDK profile in settings.xml

Seems I have answered most of these questions after further experimentation, and only don't know the answer to Q11. :)
