I'm trying to write a simple OpenGL application in Qt 5.2 using a QWindow. I can't seem to enable depth testing. I've simplified the QWindow OpenGL example heavily: I'm drawing a triangle with coloured vertices, followed by a triangle with white vertices. The white triangle has larger Z coordinates, so should appear behind the coloured triangle. It doesn't.

I'm explicitly setting the QWindow's surface format's depth buffer size to 24, but when I check with the QWindow::format() function, the depth buffer size is 0. With QGLFormat, I know there's a setDepth() function that you can use to turn on the depth buffer, but there's no similar function in QSurfaceFormat.

What am I doing wrong?

The white triangle has larger Z coordinates, so should appear behind the coloured triangle. That's where you're wrong the identity matrix imagines your camera in the origin looking down the negative Z axis. However, that does not preclude the camera from "seeing behind itself". – PeterT May 4 '14 at 23:05
    
I've played around with the Z coordinates a bit because I sometimes get muddled with these things. It doesn't make any difference. I also have the same code in a QGLWidget, and the white triangle DOES appear behind the coloured one. If I make the Z 1 or bigger, it disappears entirely. – rainbowgoblin May 4 '14 at 23:09
    
Yeah, if you don't setup any camera attributes then you have to imagine your camera being a cube from (-1,-1,-1) to (1,1,1) with the actual center being (0,0,0). I don't know what QGLWidget does to change that (possibly flipping the Z coordinate to make it DX style or using ANGLE). But the default is what I told you, try to make one triange be a 0 and the other at -0.5 and you'll see what I mean. – PeterT May 4 '14 at 23:16
    
Good luck getting a pixel format with 16x MSAA. That's a little on the absurd side. On AMD hardware, the only way you can get that is if you have a cross-fire configuration. I suspect that is the reason you're not getting a useful pixel format. Some NV hardware will let you get 32x MSAA in a single GPU configuration, but realistically you should not be unconditionally requesting anything above 4-8x because vendor limits vary so much. – Andon M. Honestly, I didn't know what to use as a depth buffer size... I don't need much, really, I just found 24 as a sort of magic number in a Qt Center post by someone who seemed to know what they were talking about. I just wanted to get SOMETHING working. The problem was this: I was setting the surface format after calling my SphereWindow constructor, but creating a QOpenGLContext and setting its format inside the constructor. The result was that the context wasn't getting a depth buffer. I've moved the calls to QOpenGLContext::setFormat() and QOpenGLContext::create() to my SphereWindow::initialize() function, and depth buffering is working for me now.

As I mentioned in a comment above, I had pretty much identical code in a QGLWidget-based setup, and depth buffering worked "out of the box". I guess QGLWidget (or QGLFormat?) must have a depth buffer turned on by default, and QWindow (or QSurfaceFormat?) doesn't.
