I am running into problems trying to authenticate against the RT REST API in a Spring Security application in the following scenario:

  1. User enters credentials (username and password) in a web form
  2. Spring Security catches credentials
  3. Application logs into RT REST API by sending the credentials
  4. Spring Security checks if a valid User object was returned and completes authentication if so

Steps 1 and 2 work fine when using in-memory authentication for testing purposes. But I run into trouble with steps 3 and 4. As far as I understood the mechanism behind Spring Security I need to write a custom UserDetailsService and AuthenticationProvider implementation.

The real problem is the UserDetailsService. When I request user details from the RT REST API I must already be logged in or RT will send a "Bad Credentials" error. The UserDetailsService method loadUserByUsername() only takes a username as argument, so this method cannot login to RT. To make it more complicated the REST API of RT does not return the user's password, just a row of asterisks. This makes checking for correct password, as it is done in the default DaoAuthenticationProvider, impossible. If I get valid user details this is proof of correct credentials, no need to check the password again. So I need a custom AuthenticationProvider as well.

If I login into RT in the custom AuthenticationProvider (where username AND password are known) the UserDetailsService becomes obsolete since the login to RT already returns user details if it was successful (I login using the "REST/1.0/user/{username}" endpoint and providing credentials via POST data as suggested by the RT API documentation). So authetication could be done here, no UserDetailsService neccessary, but I am not sure if Spring Security uses the UserDetailsService in other places than the authentication chain and those parts then would fail.

Has anyone a solution how to implement such a authentication mechanism into Spring Security?
