This code selects either the leds or the 7 segment display to show it's 8-bit data that i feed in through the switches. I select the led or the 7 segment through a push button. When I try to run it on my nexys2 board the led part works fine but as i press the pushbutton the selected 7segment glows and changes its value with the led glowing as well. Also the 7 segment changes it's value only when i press the pushbuton again. I am a newbie and i think I am having trouble making a good logic or what is the issue? any help would be appreciated!

You are not changing the value for the output that is not selected, so it remains in the state it has been assigned last.

Also, your code your code will only ever have an effect on the rising edge of the clock, so the sensitivity list can be reduced to (clk) (at which point, clk'event is implied).

Yep you are right i need to clear the previous states. But are you sure about the second part? The code depends on the case and i need to put its value in the process, no? Also how can i clear the previous inputs? Any clues? –  alexhilton May 12 '14 at 7:22
    
The sensitivity list is not a list of all inputs, but only those where a change in value would instantaneously change the output of the process. If comb or sel changes, but there is no rising edge of the clock, the process does nothing. –  Simon Richter May 12 '14 at 7:37
    
You'd clear the previous state by resetting any outputs that may still have earlier state. In your case, assigning led <= (others => '1') after setting number, and number <= (others => '1'); after setting led should do the trick. –  Simon Richter May 12 '14 at 7:39
    
It works fine now. You are right. But i read in Douglas that if you have a combinational circuit you need to put all the inputs in the sensitivity list! –  alexhilton May 12 '14 at 7:49
    
A combinatorial circuit does not have a clock, so changes in the input propagate immediately, making the process output sensitive to all inputs. –  Simon Richter May 12 '14 at 8:08
