I have created a series of 11 maps for different years using a continuous scale. By moving from one map to the next, one should see changes in the values over time. However, I used a continuous scale which is confusing since a certain colour, e.g. red will indicate a very different value in one year compared to another. Therefore, I want to replace the continuous scale by a discrete scale with fixed value ranges.

Here is my attempt to convert the scale into discrete which, however, does not work:

I got the following error message:

Error in scale_fill_manual(breaks = c("0", "0.2", "0.5", "1", "1.5", "2",  : 
  target of assignment expands to non-language object

And I have the suspicion that this might not be the only problem! I would greatly appreciate any help.

If so, then you are running code that isn't in your question. Have you bothered looking for an instance of "+<-" in your code? I'm not going to walk through basic debugging with you via exchanging comments. Good luck! –  joran May 16 '14 at 22:41
