I'm having the same problem he's having, except his fix didn't fix my code.

Here's my old (vb6) code:

And, like the poster linked above, the hash of the password is the same, and the first 8 bytes of the encrypted byte array are the same. I've got the initialization vector set to 8 bytes of zero, but I figure if the first 8 bytes of the encrypted data are the same, then the initialization vector must match. I just can't figure out why the next 8 bytes differ. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong here?

Two bugs with your code as pasted - you're redefining password inside your function, and the PaddingMode is PaddingMode.PKCS7, not PaddingMode.PKS7. It would also help if you could provide a sample input and output for each version so we can compare them. –  Bobson May 22 '14 at 14:47

I've edited the code to fix the bugs; they aren't present in the real code. Here's output: Encrypt("This is a Test", "test"): Results from vb6: {88 241 158 115 160 7 65 122 202 119 153 101 247 249 57 140} Results from c#: {88 241 158 115 160 7 65 122 45 163 192 121 255 202 43 69 175 83 151 24 25 121 240 70} I also just noticed as I type this that the result from vb6 is 16 bytes long while the result from c# is 24 bytes long. I'm thinking that also indicates that I've got a wire crossed somewhere. –  zeusalmighty May 22 '14 at 15:58

There's actually a very simple solution, although it's not at all obvious. You have a block of code which says "If this data isn't exactly a multiple of 8, pad it." However, this is changing the value you're encrypting, so you get a different result.

Simply remove the whole if(streamToEncrypt.Length.Dump("Length") % 8 != 0) {} block and you'll get the expected result.

We'll I'll be a monkey's uncle. When I was doing initial compares, I noticed that the byte array being passed into the old VB6 code was being padded with the first CryptEncrypt() call to retrieve the length, and then the ReDim buffer(bfrlen - 1) followed by the for loop, so I just mimicked it. Just thought about it; how come the padding works in the vb6 code but not the c# code? Presumably, in a block cipher, it encodes a block at a time (64 bits right?), so a padded 16 byte array should return the same result as an unpadded 14 byte array, no? –  zeusalmighty May 22 '14 at 17:47
    
It has to do with the prov3des.Padding = PaddingMode.PKCS7 line. Valid options and details are here. Manually padding it with 0 is equivalent to PaddingMode.Zeros. Using PaddingMode.None will bomb out if you didn't pad it. You can try and emulate PaddingMode.PKCS7 manually by filling all the extra spots with the byte value of (8 - (streamToEncrypt.Length % 8)) from your code, but then you have to truncate the result (because it assumes those extra characters are part of the string). –  Bobson May 22 '14 at 19:26

If the first 8 bytes are the same and the rest are not, it sounds like you are using a different form of feedback than the original algorithm. Try using different values of CipherMode and see if one of them gives you a match.
