I'm reading the book Developing Games in Java. The chapter 8 shows how to load Wavefront .obj files. My obj file is located at C://pathToMyWorkspace//ProjectName//res//coffeCup.obj

When I try to load a Wavefront .obj file the compiler throws me the error:

For some reason the compiler tries to load from "res/res/coffeCup.obj", but the path that I specified is just "res/coffeCup.obj".

Well, the problem here is that the path handling of the ObjectLoader class is wrong. The relevant call sequence can be seen in this minimal example:

From the given file, it obtains the "parent file" (that is, the directory where the file is contained in) and stores it as the path. Later, the file name is attached to this path again, in order to obtain the final file name. So when the filename starts with a relative path prefix (like the res/ in your case), this part is duplicated.

(BTW: The reason why he stores the path is that is that the OBJ file may contain references to other files that are assumed to be in the same directory, e.g. the MTL file, which in turn may contain further references to texture files).

The "simplest" solution that I can imagine now would be to manually handle the path and the file name. The basic idea is sketched here, it should be possible to transfer this to the original ObjectLoader class:

I just don't understand how the author loads the file. He does something like "../folder/Resource.obj". –  Worm May 22 at 20:12
    
@user3666392 Interesting. I can't imagine how this should work with the given code. I think the test code that I extracted should exactly show the behavior of the original ObjectLoader, and there, the path prefix is definitely added erroneously. Maybe someone else has another idea and can comment on this...? –  Marco13 May 22 at 20:24
    
You should add this information not in a comment, but properly formatted as an "edit" of your question, possibly together with the stack trace, and preferably stripped down to a minimal test example like the one that I posted. Sorry for taking too much time to answer. Well, the "second version" of FilePathTest prints true for the first file (.obj file, because the file really exists). And the second prints false (.mtl file, because it doesn't exists). PS: I edited the code from my question to my new ObjectLoader, the new Texture3DTest and the new error. You did not mention where and how exactly your current loading code differs from the test case. In any case, I have to ask for clarification: Is the exception still the same? Is the file that is not found still the same? (Or does the OBJ file refer to an MTL file, and could it be that this is now causing the problem?). This is not entirely clear, because the file name does not seem to be correct any more (res/coffeCup.obj vs. res\coffe in the exception - the extension may be stripped, but not the Cup part...) –  Marco13 May 23 at 17:03
