I'm trying to decode an image string from an XML made by a legacy system (in VB.NET), to be uploaded to our new system, so that we can send it again to a possibly .NET server (i'm not sure but i suppose so since the legacy system was made in VB.NET).

the image string was supposedly encoded using Base64, so I tried it in Groovy using apache commons, but I can't produce the same output from that of the legacy output.

I've read from here that a .NET byte is different from a Java byte, so i searched for similar situations, and found that i can use a ByteBuffer class to change the Byte Order to LITTLE ENDIAN and found a snippet Here, still from SO, to get unsigned bytes in java

public static int byteToUnsigned(byte b) {
    return b & 0xFF;

so i combined them both and so far came up with this:

def getLittleEndianBase64String(byte[] data) {
String littleEndianString
int unsignedByte
ByteBuffer bb = ByteBuffer.allocate(data.length)
for(byte b in data){
  unsignedByte = byteToUnsigned(b)
byte[] byteImage = new byte[data.length]
littleEndianBase64String = new String(Base64.encodeBase64(imageByte,true))
return littleEndianBase64String.trim()

Am I doing this right? This is my first time working with a ByteBuffer so I really don't know if i'm suppose to call flip() or rewind().. or would it even matter if I don't change its endianness and signedness at all?
