I’m currently trying to build a parser for the language Oberon using Antlr and Ecplise.

This is what I have got so far:

My problem is when I check the grammar I get the following error and just can’t find an appropriate way to fix this:

rule statement has non-LL(*) decision 
due to recursive rule invocations reachable from alts 1,2.  
Resolve by left-factoring or using syntactic predicates 
or using backtrack=true option. 
|---> statement : assignment

Also I have the problem with declarationsequence and simpleexpression.

When I use options { … backtrack = true; … } it at least compiles, but obviously doesn’t work right anymore when I run a test-file, but I can’t find a way to resolve the left-recursion on my own (or maybe I’m just too blind at the moment because I’ve looked at this for far too long now). Any ideas how I could change the lines where the errors occurs to make it work?

EDIT I could fix one of the three mistakes. statement works now. The problem was that assignment and procedurecall both started with designator.

Is there a particular reason you're using v3 instead of v4? Chances are ANTLR4 will have no issue parsing it. –  Bart Kiers May 26 at 13:24
    
How did you know I'm using v3? :D Actually the reason is that v3 was already installed on my system. Is there another way to fix this or is an update inevitable? –  TheMotivation May 26 at 17:59

The backtrack and output options are v3 specific. I'm sure there is a way to fix it with v3, but it would involve quite a bit of debugging, something I would not undertake with v4 being readily available. Version 4's superior parsing algorithms would make writing the grammar a breeze compared to doing it with v3: so unless there is an absolute need for v3, you really should go for v4. –  Bart Kiers May 26 at 18:10
    
Thanks so far, I'll probably update to v4, but still I will try to fix this in v3. Maybe I (or someone else on stackoverflow) finds a way. I've edited my post already because I've found a way to resolve the left-recursion in 'statement'. –  TheMotivation May 26 at 18:32
