I want to communicate between a parent process and spawned child processes OR to isolated AppDomains securely and privately (the AppDomains part is already implemented, I'd like to provide an option for even greater isolation). Managed Addin Framework provides just this functionality, but the prescribed folder structure, etc. are absolutely undesirable for my circumstances. Again, I want to retain and abstract away the choice of AppDomain vs Process isolation but without the silly folder structure and independent contract assemblies required in MAF (I can deal with that in other ways).
I believe that WCF is the only recommended remoting mechanism for .NET development. Using any network-based WCF Binding is overkill and the parent process would be inappropriately open to connections that it shouldn't accept from non-child processes. Named Pipes are better, I think, but their named-ness still keeps them open to non-children.
What I think would be ideal is (a pair of) Anonymous Pipes per child process, whose handles can be shared ONLY with child processes. Unfortunately, there are no built-in AnonymousPipes mechanisms for WCF and though I've started it, building the ChannelListener/ChannelFactory/Binding is overwhelming me.
Is this the "best" way forward? Or is there a simpler way to hook into the RPC serialization of WCF but decoupled from WCF? That is, can I just provide the pairs of
AnonymousPipeClientStream to some lighter-weight and sub-component? Something that acts as a DataContract proxy and serializes to the provided stream. And on the other side, deserializes and dispatches to a DataContract implementation?
And even with AnonymousPipes, how can I ensure that a rogue child process isn't able to interfere with a sibling's communication with the parent? Since the pipe handles are marked inheritable and are transmitted to the child process as a string, what stops a different child process from predicting the handle string and hijacking that connection? If you were curious, handles are strings like "872" and "808" - not sequential, but certainly not tough to find. I guess an additional randomly generated passphrase could be used to authenticate the child process by the parent, but even having connected to authenticate, the pipes would have been consumed/spent and unavailable to the intended child. How can that be dealt with?
