I'm new to AWS EC2. I apologize if I get some of the terminology incorrect. While I've been reading a lot of AWS documentation there are few gaps I have not been able to piece together.

In regards to the AWS architecture, I read how it should be viewed as an SOA architecture rather than an server model [1]. So, my question revolves around designing AWS instances(?) to be a more resilient platform in regards to how it will perform as instances automatically spin up and down. To over-simplify my design, users schedule jobs via a web interface which, when the time is appropriate, then kicks off a python script on a different server/instance which handles the heavy lifting: going out the web, getting and processing data. These python runs may (or may not) take a significant period of time to complete.

So my first question: can someone please explain (or point me in the right direction) on the best way to write/rewrite my python script to accommodate AWS SOA architecture so that it properly balances the load, does not have race conditions, etc.?

Second, while I've read up on instance types I have a question on how they get spun up and down. This is due to my lack of experience with the platform and the interface. Let us say you create an AMI instance, configure the server, put the applications on it, etc and get it up and running. Is this now a "saved AMI image" which gets spun up and down as is? Or am I missing something. I'm worried that a new instance may be spun up automatically and may erase my prior work.
