I've seen many topics on stackoverflow regarding html tag removal and I used the best answer on this topic here.

I then tried it along with the "line_profiler" to see how long it takes to run this with the function mentioned on the link above vs the regex (second best answer on the link). Regex gives a much much faster solution but it does not remove HTML entities.

As I need to do it on millions of web pages I have the following related questions:

  1. what is the FASTEST way to remove HTML tags? I can sacrifice accuracy for speed.
  2. How can I get rid of the HTML entities? Is this regex the best I could do: (\&lt\;).*?(\&gt\;) or is there a better one?

It depends on how much accuracy you are ready to sacrifice... the fastest possible solution is: def clean_html(text): return "" which guarantees to remove all html tags/entities... –  Bakuriu Jun 8 '14 at 10:14
a) install lxml and BeautifulSoup 4, b) text = BeautifulSoup(html).get_text(). Done. Accurate and reasonably fast. –  Martijn Pieters Jun 8 '14 at 10:16

For what it's worth, here's something I've used in the past before I knew of libraries mentioned in the comments. Probably not the fastest though.

def splitTagsFromText(string):
    result = []
    stack = []
    for char in string:
        if char == '<':
            if result and not stack:
                yield ''.join(result)
                result = []
        if char == '>':
            if not stack:
                yield ''.join(result)
                result = []
    if result:
        yield ''.join(result)

When you call list(splitTagsFromText("""text <el> text1 </el> text2 text3""")), you'll get ['text', '<el>', 'text1', '</el>', 'text2 text3']. From here it's 1 more step to get only text (or modify the original function to forget about elements and not yield them to begin with).
