I wrote a class that will help me with my application authentication process.

The idea is to

  1. Change the session storage engine from files on the servers to a database.
  2. Create a random session id and not relay on PHP to generate the session id for me
  3. Change the length of the session id to the max allowed (ie. 40 Characters)
  4. Store the new session id into a table along with a user_id (application user identifier,) along with the user's IP address and user agent info.
  5. Set an idle time out so that the system will automatically destroy the user session after 1800 seconds of idle time.

After implementing the above, On every requested page I check for the following to be true

  1. A valid session ID in the user's Browser.
  2. Make sure I can match the current IP address and the current user agent info to those info that were captured at the time of login.
  3. If the session is valid and not expired then use it otherwise create a new one if the user_is is available (aka a log in attempt.)

The issue that I am seeing is that when the user closes his/her browser the cookie that contains the session id is still available. Why doesn't the cookie expires when the browser is closed?

Also, do you see any defect/flow in my code or anything I can do to increase the security of my authentication process?

here e is how I use this class when a user log in the I check the username and password. Then I do this

Then one every page I execute the following code that will make sure the user is Autherized

Some modern browsers deliberately don't remove session cookies. Look into specifically what browsers aren't expiring the cookie and what user settings are in place. – Michael Berkowski Jun 16 '14 at 0:09
Jared, my function is random and it uses a-z A-Z and minus and comma. I was told the the built in PHP function would be a lot easier to brute force guess a session ID. Also, about the cookie In my code I have it set to expire at 0 which mean to expire when the broswer closes – Jaylen Jun 16 '14 at 0:10
