I followed the book code on page 20 to convert a dataframe of 12 columns into a time series, aggregate the months global temperature into yearly, and then plot it, but it's not working

Here is the error I got: Error in plotts(x = x, y = y, plot.type = plot.type, xy.labels = xy.labels, : cannot plot more than 10 series as "multiple"

Here is the code from the book, I have also included the dataset from their website

 global.ts = ts(global, st=c(1856,1), end=c(2005,12), fr=12)
 global.annual = aggregate(global.ts, FUN=mean)
 plot(global.ts); plot(global.annual)

Here is what I don't understand: dim(global) is 150 12, but dim(global.ts) is 1800 12. Shouldn't it be the same dimension? Then dim(global.annual) is 150 12. Shouldn't it be 150 1, since the mean is taken over all the months.

Also, I am assuming each columns is global temperatures for each months, since there are 150 rows,which corresponds to the numbers of years from 1856 to 2005.

Does anyone know how to fix the code? Thaks

Your problem is here, where you apply ts to a data.frame resulting from read.table rather than a vector of values:

global <- read.table("Chapter01global.txt",header=F)
global.ts = ts(global, st=c(1856,1), end=c(2005,12), fr=12)

Compare their code:

www = "http://web.address.that.doesnt.work.anymore.com"
global = scan(www)
#Read 1800 items
global.ts = ts(global, st=c(1856,1), end=c(2005,12), fr=12)

Your code results in:

str(global)
#'data.frame':   150 obs. of  12 variables: ...

Their code would result in a vector which can then be turned into a proper ts object:

str(global)
#num [1:1800] -0.384 -0.457 -0.673 -0.344 -...
