I'm not very fluent with SQL Server commands.

I need a script to restore a database from a .bak file and move the logical_data and logical_log files to a specific path.

I can do:

restore filelistonly from disk='D:\backups\my_backup.bak'

This will give me a result set with a column LogicalName, next I need to use the logical names from the result set in the restore command:

restore database my_db_name from disk='d:\backups\my_backups.bak' with file=1,
move 'logical_data_file' to 'd:\data\mydb.mdf',
move 'logical_log_file' to 'd:\data\mylog.ldf'

How do I capture the logical names from the first result set into variables that can be supplied to the "move" command?

I think the solution might be trivial, but I'm pretty new to SQL Server.

Is it that you do not know the logical name at the time you do the restore? – Thomas Mar 24 '10 at 18:13

Here's the fully automated restore T-SQL stored proc. Accepts three(3) parameters.

  1. Target Database
  2. Source Database
  3. Fully Qualified backup file name location
    (\\yourserver\yourshare\backupfile.bak or simply c:\backup.bak)

+1 exactly what I was after! I did notice though that I can't find where the following variables are set @v_strDBFilename, @v_strDBLogFilename, @v_strDBDataFile and @v_strDBLogFile. I noticed this when I ran the script and there was no output for them. – Ralph Willgoss Apr 20 '10 at 12:56

RESTORE FILELISTONLY produces a result set that is documented in the MSDN. You then need to iterate this result set and build an appropriate RESTORE ... MOVE... How you capture and iterate the result set depends on your environment. In a C# application you would use a SqlDataReader. In pure T-SQL you would use INSERT ... EXEC.

The skeleton of a pure SQL solution would be:

This won't work on SQL Server 2005 though. "TDEThumbprint" is a new field for 2008. INSERT INTO @fileList will blow-up in 2005 instances. – mevdiven Mar 24 '10 at 20:48

I had same issue, but in my environment I have many backup files (faster backups), and did need to restore to custom location. This query gets latest full backup info and restores to the path you specify. Tested on SQL 2005/2008.

this might help. I wanted to create a script for a client with the minimum variables required to be set for multiple database backups restored from a single location. I tried to avoid using dynamic SQL because I think it all gets a little messy.

Yet another modification/implementations. Here's my 2 cents. I have modified Mevdiven's script above, so that it will restore the file to the current database data directory. I have a problem in that I do not want to use the location defined in the back up file.

I grab the data directory used by the first master file

And use that as my destination data path.

I also found that the ##FILE_LIST table was hanging around, so I drop it near the end.

The extra --' are just so the SQL looks nice on Stack overflow

not sure how to add comments under a particular solution but I have just implemented the solution provided by Mevdiven above...

There is a slight problem with the drop table in my environment (Server 08 r2). I have had to modify this to use the object id in order to drop successfully.

I also had problems due to a large number of partitions in the backup file, so I had to change the string to be nvarchar(MAX).

I also added ability to restore the database into another directory (as our dev vs prod environments have different paths)

This is a link to a framework for automating SQL database restores. It can help to initialize database mirroring and availability groups, execute test restores to verify production backup file integrity, implement a basic log shipping solution and to perform side by side upgrades. Recovery to history points in time is also possible, restores are optimized using the appropriate full, diff, log backups.
