This loads ok. But if you uncomment the subclasses R will complain when loading:

I do not know exactly why, but the parent's class initialize method is called by setRefClass. Therefore you should ensure that your parent class can be constructed with no arguments. e.g.:

Myclass$methods(
  initialize = function(fa = 0, fb = 0, filename = "") {
    message("Initializing object in class...")
    .self$fa = fa
    .self$fb = fb
    if (nzchar(filename)) {
      .self$data = read.table(.self$filename, header = TRUE)
    }
  }
)

I also find that very strange, why on the earth should the constructor be called when the package is loaded and no instance is created? Thanks for the fix! –  qed Aug 18 at 9:39
