I have this issue in either postgreSQL 8.3 or 8.4:

I've created a script which (re)creates three temp sequences and then uses them to transpose some tables in order to get a single row.

Now I want to put it in a FUNCTION which returns a type already created (I've done a select into and then I took the fields from the created table to build the custom type). Here is the script... the thing is, pgsql says that the relation 'q' does not exist and the execution of this SQL w/out the function is successful... should I guess that the sequence creation can't be done inside a SQL function? Thanks!!

What is "PostgreSQL8" ? Version 8.0 or 8.1 or 8.2 or 8.3 or 8.4? These are all different versions. plpgsql might be a better language, sql is limited. –  Frank Heikens Apr 23 '10 at 13:39

Yes you can, no problem. Just use EXECUTE inside the procedure. –  Frank Heikens Apr 23 '10 at 13:56

Generally I'll use arrays and generate_series to do stuff like this.

SELECT CASE WHEN i=1 THEN nombre_apellidos END as nomapeacc1, ...
FROM pit_people p
CROSS JOIN generate_series(1,5) s(i)

But what I think you really want is to do a crosstab. http://www.postgresql.org/docs/8.3/static/tablefunc.html

This messy code is intended to retrieve info from a single person in ONE row. This includes transposing some rows from related tables (take N rows from children and put them besides the user's info). But well, I think I'm too tired to keep on this, I'll attack the problem in other way. –  Alfabravo Apr 23 '10 at 21:12
    
Yeah, I know what you are trying to do. The generate_series() will allow you to get rid of the temporary sequences so you can create a view rather than using a procedure. And the link I gave you does exactly the sort of thing you are trying to do. –  Scott Bailey Apr 26 '10 at 15:23
