Because my userdata objects reference themselves, I need to delete and nil a variable for the garbage collector to work.

Lua code:

obj = object:new()

Is there some way I can set the object to nil in Lua, and have the delete() method called automatically? Alternatively, can the delete method nil all variables that reference the object? Can the self reference be made 'weak'?

EDIT 1: I've included code to show why the object references itself; see the do_callback function. Each object is part of a tree-like structure, with the bulk of the processing done in C, but a user can set a custom Lua function that is called under certain conditions.

EDIT 2: Another possible solution comes to mind; Instead of each obj keeping a reference to itself, can I lookup the object in the global index when I need to pass it to Lua, using its address as a key?

I will not give this as a normal answer because I don't know how to solve your whole problem, but have you looked into Lua's __gc-metamethod? – ponzao May 3 '10 at 5:21
The userdata has the __gc callback; but it isn't called until after the self-reference is removed in delete(), and all variables pointing the the userdata are nil. – x-x May 3 '10 at 5:56
Why do you need a self reference? On the C side you can store (Object *)obj, and depend on __gc to clean up; on the Lua side you have obj. – Doug Currie May 3 '10 at 15:44

OK, in this case, Neruz's suggestion is good. After no (strong) references to obj remain in Lua, obj will be collected. You may need to make a strong reference to the callback function if the only reference is from obj, in which case you'll need a __gc method for obj to remove the reference to the callback so it can be collected. – Doug Currie May 4 '10 at 2:39

You could try creating a weak table in the registry and store your references there, that way setting all references of your object to nil should make it available for the gc.

That depends on what the self reference is being used for, so I asked drtwox that question. If the self reference is being used to prevent the userdata from being collected, a weak reference won't work. For other uses, your solution is good, though I prefer a weak table in the library's environment. – Doug Currie May 3 '10 at 15:47
