I have tried on two different servers to get beanstalkd up and running and do a couple tests (locally on MacOSX compiled from source, and on a CentOS server installed with yum)

I can get the server running either with

sudo beanstalkd -d -p 11300


sudo beanstalkd -p 11300 &

I then tried using the php lib and it just froze. Connecting directly:

telnet localhost 11300

I do the following to mimic the PHP test script:

use foo
put 0 0 120 5
reserve-with-timeout 0

If I just run


It's stuck indefinitely.

PHP code is

    * the *peek modes have a companion setting, peek_usleep, which tells the client how long
    * to usleep() for between peeks to servers.
    * auto_unyaml -> if true, this causes the client to assume the presence of the syck yaml
    * parser, and attempts to 'unyamlize' yaml output for you before returning it.

Can you add the PHP code that has the trouble? Also version of the daemon ('beanstalkd -v'). You don't have to run it always as a daemon either - it will happily site in the foreground in a terminal window. – Alister Bulman May 12 '10 at 12:07
Version if 1.4.4, have added the PHP code above. Thanks for the tip on not running as -d, same issue applies but saves time killing an endless loop. – Brian Hogg May 12 '10 at 13:31
Quick note that I'm able to reserve when not using a new tube, though list-tubes command does list "foo" when using the above telnet commands. So could just be something in the config or setup stopping separate tubes from working. – Brian Hogg May 12 '10 at 13:59

To use tubes other than default it looks like you need to add a "watch" for that tube. For example:

use foo
put 0 0 120 5
reserve-with-timeout 5
OK 20
- default
- foo

watch foo
reserve-with-timeout 5

This isn't too clear on the documentation, which seems to imply that the "use" command automatically has reserve commands using the tube - just as put automatically uses that tube.

You might want to have a look at the beanstalkc tutorial (esp. line 138ff). Even though the tutorial was written for a Python client library, it covers most beanstalkd aspects and could be useful for users of other languages/libraries as well. – earl May 12 '10 at 23:18

using keyword is for putting data in the tube, watch keyword is to retrieve one. the answer is good, the problem that the problem author write to a tube he does not watched – asdmin Jul 29 '10 at 15:51

This document is more clear.

The "use" command is for producers. Subsequent put commands will put jobs into the tube specified by this command. If no use command has been issued, jobs will be put into the tube named "default".

The "watch" command adds the named tube to the watch list for the current connection. A reserve command will take a job from any of the tubes in the watch list. For each new connection, the watch list initially consists of one tube, named "default".

so in consumer you don't need to call "use", but to call "watch"

It's designed to block on reserve - it's waiting for a job. In another terminal, put a job into the tube - your reserve command will return with the new job.

Firstly, the OP is using reserve-with-timeout; this shouldn't block. Secondly, they put a job on the tube first, and then reserve the job, so the job should be available straight away if everything else is good (and there are no other watchers on the tube.) – J-P Aug 15 '12 at 13:42
