I am trying to start testing on a django app. The app is working fine but I want to set up testing before I do some refactoring. Now I just tried to do a simple dummy test:

Seems to be an error when creating the test database. How can this throw a validation error? How can I resolve this?

If you're running Django tests, particularly those involving the database, you should be sub-classing Django's TestCase, not unittest.TestCase:

from django.test import TestCase

I'm pretty sure this will solve your problem, but it might be there's something else wrong with your environment.

EDIT 2: Could there be an error in a models.DateTimeField declaration on one of your models? That might cause the validation error.

  • The problem seems to be that I get this error independently of the tests.py file - it seems to throw this error even before getting to the test-file. Apr 28, 2015 at 6:58

There was an error in one of the past migrations (which then probably was not detected by south) in another app in the same project. I found this by running: manage.py test myapp -v 2 So I made sure that everything on the database is up-to-date and I deleted the migrations. No it works.
