Somebody asked this question on the Hibernate forums and I'm linking to it here because I have the same question. Nobody seemed to be of any help there so I'm hoping this might be more useful.

Interesting. Here goes what i have done

package br.com.ar.model.domain.Parent;

@Entity
public class Parent implements Serializable {

    private Integer id;

    private AbstractChild[] childArray;

    @Id
    @GeneratedValue
    public Integer getId() {

    public void setId(Integer id) {
        this.id = id;

Now our array of AbstractChild (Are you sure you have defined your AbstractChild (Here, It plays The role of Book class) as abstract ???)

Both work fine!

You are right. The problem is that you cannot have a list of superclasses if you are using the table per concrete class mapping strategy. This table per hierarchy works for this issue. Thanks. –  NickDK Jun 29 '10 at 19:42
