I'm porting some old C++ project on Linux (RHEL 5.3) and, therefore need to obtain all the binaries on RHEL 5.3. The result should be in the end several libraries + the executable.

I have some dependencies from several 3rd parties. My project libraries have dependencies as some of the 3rd party libraries.

My library MyLib depends My3rdPartyLib.

I'm getting a memory fault error.

I have installed valgrind to get more details.

 - ObjectClass3rdParty_FACTORY_LIST is part of My3rdPartyLib 
 - MyClass_FACTORY is part of MyLib

What I tested so far :

  • if I do a map of key-type string (std::string) and value-type string I can add an element to to the map without any issue

  • if I bring a similar class to My3rdPartyClass into MyLib (exactly the same structure, just a different name) adding an element to a map of key-type string (std::string) and value-type MyCopyOfMy3rdPartyClass it works....

To my surprise :

a ldd executed to MyLib.so

Could this strange behavior be caused by libstdc++.so.6 used by MyLib as opposed to libstdc++.so.5 used by My3rdPartyLib?

While I have major problems getting my head wrapped around the precise problem, I would probably try using a map<string, My3rdPartyClass*> to see if the problem goes away. – MSalters Jul 7 '10 at 14:46
    
Thanks for the reply.Unfortunately I can not change the map structure as it is defined in one of the headers from the 3rd party library. I guess the problem would translate into : is it possible to get memory fault issues because some of my components are using libstdc++.so.5 (3rdParty) and the other libstdc++.so.6 (my own)? @silver77: mixing different libstc++ major versions is verboten. seems you would have to make your components to use the libstdc++.so.5 somehow. The 5 and the 6 in the library name here are the major version numbers: different major version numbers mean binary incompatibility. – Dummy00001 Jul 7 '10 at 16:31
    
Thanks for the reply. I'm struggling to find a way to compile my libraries with libstdc++.so.5. ...any help in this direction is highly appreciated. So far I have tried using the compat version of the compiler - no success (still links with libstdc++.so.6, even if libstdc++.so.5 is present ).... Any idea? – silver77 Jul 7 '10 at 16:41
