I created a MySQL view using UNION ALL from two tables so that I would get the same column names for the same data in those tables (i.e. tbl1.author2 AS translator ... tbl2.translator AS translator) and so on, the problem is when I try to select something from that view, half of the data comes out as BLOB, instead of the original value.

The view definition is:

When you create a view with a UNION, you have to make sure the data types of the corresponding columns are the same (or at least, similar enough for one to be converted to the other). In the current case, the first column of the view is a publishers or a price_vat, and no data type definition apart from BLOB can make much sense of that.

If you really need this as a view, you could try...

SELECT e.price_vat AS price_vat, 
       NULL        AS publishers,
       ...etc...
       'e'         AS type
    FROM ama_euromedia_products AS e;
UNION ALL
SELECT
     NULL         AS price_vat,
     k.publishers AS publishers, 
     ...etc...
     'k'          AS type
     FROM ama_kosmas_products AS k;

to get a single data type into each column.

Ok, so basically the problem is that in example prod_id derived from e. is a INT(9) and prod_id derived from k. is a VARCHAR(255)? –  cypher Jul 19 '10 at 10:35
    
Ad. edit - setting NULL as publishers won't help, there are exactly the same aliased column names in both parts of the view - that's the whole point why am I doing this as a view. If I understand it correctly, changing the datatypes of the fields in the original tables will help? –  cypher Jul 19 '10 at 10:40

You could try SELECT CAST(e.price_vat AS VARCHAR(255)) AS price_vat (or similar) rather than changing your original tables; that might be better. There's also no point in setting column names in the second half of the UNION if they are different from those in the first query; the view's column can only have one name. –  Brian Hooper Jul 19 '10 at 10:45
    
The view's columns can have duplicite names while using UNION. I'll try the CAST, that should probably do it, thank you. –  cypher Jul 19 '10 at 10:49
