I'm developing a irc client in python based on irc.IRCClient and pygtk, I'm using the correct reactor and all works fine. Now I would launch a browser when clicking a Url... The better choice is to use xdg-open which runs the configured default browser (in a free desktop compliant DE). The url is picked in a gtk button-press-event. I have tried all possibilities I can figure out but ever I got the cpu at 100%. Below are the various ways I tried, only using reactor.spawnProcess seems promising because until the browser is open all is fine, when closing it the cpu goes to 100%. All others the cpu jump at 100% soon and stay. Launching the browser directly don't change anything. What I'm doing wrong ?

python 2.6.5 - twisted 10.1.0 - pygtk 2.16.0

I have no idea what you are asking about in the question.. However to open a web browser, simply: import webbrowser; webbrowser.open(url) –  Blue Peppers Sep 1 '10 at 12:14
    
It would be useful if you could provide a simple program that exposes your problem but is still as small as possible (if possible without the IRC stuff etc.). –  JanC Sep 1 '10 at 17:14
    
Have you tried using a debugger like WinPDB to figure out what it's actually doing to cause the 100% CPU load? That's where I'd start. –  ssokolow Sep 4 '10 at 21:28

To close the topic: it is a bug in both pygobject and pygtk, the SIGCHLD handler enters a endless loop. This was fixed in pygobject-2.21,0 and pygtk-2.17.0

is the webbrowser module perhaps what you're looking for? It's part of python's standard library.

I want to run a browser like firefox, konqueror etc, in a desktop enviroment like Gnome or KDE you have a default browser configured which is launched when a url is clicked f.e. in a terminal window. xdg-open is the utility used for it. –  Marco Sep 1 '10 at 12:34

Above there are all the ways I had tried, all but

do the same: the browser opens the page but the cpu utilization of the program jump to 100% and stay so.

Using spawnProcess instead works fine, but when I close the browser the cpu jump to 100% load.

I think that os.system and os.spawn don't fit in twisted, the correct way must be a twisted way.

But it seems that something goes wrong closing the browser and the reactor enter a endless loop.

Any clue ?

Note, I don't need to read or write anything from/to the process spawned, nor I care about the exit status, only need to open the url and forget.

The "example above" doesn't work for obvious reasons (it uses all sorts of Twisted stuff without doing any imports, for example). What I meant is something as small as possible but still having the problem, so that we can debug the problem without having to write a mixed Twisted/Gtk application ourselves (I'm sure many/most of us never used that combination before). –  JanC Sep 2 '10 at 12:16

Here is a working (and failing) example.

I adapted your irclogbot.py to run in a pygtk app.

Sys.argv[1] is the url of a irc server.

In the method on_click change the executable path to suit a browser you have.

After the browser opened the page close it, the cpu utilization jump to 100%.
