The issue is that the further the mouse click is from the top left origin (0,0) the greater the height inaccuracy when the vertex is plotted. Any ideas?

inaccurate how? Compared to what? what are you getting and what are you expecting? –  µBio Sep 20 '10 at 19:11
    
ex. I issue the command "glVertex2i(x,y)" where x & y are the mouse click coordinates returned from glutMouseFunc(on_mouse_event). Thus, the vertex should be plotted at x, y. The x value is always plotted appropriately but the y is not. The y value being passed to "glVertex2i(x,y)" is correct, but the point plotted on the screen is not. I've noticed it IS correct when the windows aspect ratio 1:1. Any ideas? –  Drew Sep 21 '10 at 17:08

Your glOrtho() call is almost certainly wrong. You pass the window size, not the window client area size. The difference is the size of the borders and the height of the caption.

How can I determine the height of the caption for the X Window System using C++? Or is that even possible? (I realize I could just use a screen measure tool) –  Drew Sep 21 '10 at 17:24
    
In addition, if I were passing the wrong values to glOrtho, wouldn't the same problem (inaccurate y coordinate plot) still exist for a window w/ a 1:1 aspect ratio. (it doesn't through testing) –  Drew Sep 21 '10 at 17:25
    
I don't know, glut isn't much of an api, my OS doesn't support it anymore. I see people just create their own window. Aspect ratio has nothing to do with it. –  Hans Passant Sep 21 '10 at 17:29

Be aware that your actual window size will most probably be slightly different than what you asked at init time.

Simply said, implement a glutReshapeFunc()

I was compiling and running my code within Parallels VM v.6. This was the issue leading to inaccurate mouse coordinates being returned. I compiled and ran the exact same code on OS X without problem.
