sending and recieving file from tcp socket. Sending the file works however trying to save the file does not work.

What immediately stands out is that you're opening two I/O buffers onto the same file. Instead of an ifstream and an ofstream, create a single fstream. If you must maintain two simultaneous file positions, at least set both objects to unbuffered with file.rdbuf()->setbuf(0,0);. –  Potatoswatter Oct 10 '10 at 22:52

The problem I see is file << bbuffer. The ofstream's << operator writes until the first NULL byte. Don't forget your buffer is a string (or better, a char *). So, if bbuffer doesn't contain a NULL byte, your program is likely to crash with a SIGSEGV.

You should use file.write(bbuffer, p) instead of file << bbuffer. Also, there's no need to cleanup your buffer using bzero or memset.

And since you didn't provide a compilable source, I wrote the following (supposing Linux/Unix):

Just for completeness: Be aware that p == -1 doesn't necessarily mean an error that can't be handled. When it occurs, you should also check for errno == EAGAIN (if it's a non-blocking socket) and for errno == EINTR to detect if a signal interrupted the operation. –  jweyrich Oct 12 '10 at 1:52
    
your code does not seem to be working for me. My program still stalls when trying to recieve the file. I know that I can send a file because my search function works. I am on unix afs machine. –  thegreattaurus Oct 24 '10 at 22:27
